Former All Black captain Wayne ‘Buck’ Shelford MBE spoke at Transdev Auckland’s Leadership Summit on Friday 1 July, as managers from across the business gathered at the Maritime Room in Auckland’s CBD.
Introduced by Managing Director Martin Kearney, Buck gave staff an insight into the qualities that have made the All Blacks such a formidable force in world rugby over the years.
Leadership and teamwork are central to the success of any team, Buck explained, whether on the rugby field or in the business world.
“Winning is a bi-product of lots of people performing,” said Buck, who used a whakataukī (Maori proverb) to highlight the two elements which are key to effective leadership:
He aha te kai a te rangatira? He kōrero, he kōrero, he kōrero.
What is the food of the leader? It is knowledge. It is communication.
Great leaders, he said, “share knowledge, build trust and leave their values in the hearts of those who work for them.”
With leaders like Buck, the All Blacks will remain on the winning track for some time yet.
