Celebrities and staff members, affected family and supporters of the cause all climbed aboard. NZBCF Ambassador and Maori chef from the Kai Ora TV, Anne Thorp was amongst the guests as was CEO of the Foundation Evangelia Henderson and Veolia Transport Auckland Managing Director Graham Sibery.
The Pink Bra Train Breakfast hosted by Veolia celebrated the end of NZBCF’s Pink Ribbon Breakfast Campaign, which has been a huge success. The breakfast was a great way for staff, friends and supporters to enjoy the divine pastries donated by Pandoro Bakery and raise money for a great cause.
“Trains make great moving billboards and what better way to show our support for a fantastic cause than wrapping a few carriages in an original brassiere design. People look twice when they see them going past and that’s just what we wanted,” says Managing Director, Graham Sibery.
When the train reached the Strand station in Parnell the high point of the morning began. Abigail Lupton, the 11 year old daughter of senior staff member Bob Lupton, was cheered as she disembarked ready to shave her head in a fundraising effort.
Veolia with Abigail and her dad managed to raise $1000 committed from sponsors before the event and a further $500 from supporters on the day.
Abigail looked as proud as punch with her newly shorn head and is looking forward to wearing her collection of furry animal hats this winter. “It was great to be able to show my support for better breast awareness and I hope someone will read this and get a mammogram.”
Her dad, Bob Lupton made an emotional comment describing his daughter as his hero. “I am the proudest dad in New Zealand today,” he said.
“We’ve seen lots of variety in the 1,200-plus Pink Ribbon Breakfasts that have taken place around the country this month, but the pink train is one of the more creative venues,” said Evangelia (Van) Henderson, CEO at the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. “With the trains running until October, we’ll have an ongoing, eye-catching reminder for women to be breast aware.”
The trains have been out on the network all this month supporting the foundation’s campaign to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast encouraging friends, family and colleagues to get together and raise awareness about being ‘breast aware’. The campaign reinforces the message; early detection is your best protection.
Veolia worked with a number of suppliers and designers who donated their time, skills and materials to help coordinate the train wraps and the breakfast itself.
